Research & Practice Interests

Throughout the past 30 years of my life, my love for learning has never wavered.  After obtaining my teaching degree at Michigan State University, I continued my education to receive my master's degree in Educational Technology at MSU.  Now, I am working towards a doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction specializing in Educational Technology at the University of Florida.  The courses in this program have helped me identify my research and practice interests and have encouraged me to continuously analyze and better understand the educational system.  Below is a detailed explanation of my research and practice interests based on what I have learned in this program.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

My current research interests focus on upper elementary and middle school science education.  The literature I have studied over the past year revolves around inquiry-based learning and incorporating simulations in science classrooms.  My overarching research topic is as follows:

What is the impact on student achievement when blending interactive computer-based simulations and laboratory inquiry-based experiments in elementary science classrooms?

PRACTICE INTERESTS

As an instructor researching educational technology, I work specifically with methods for inquiry-based learning, virtual modeling, and simulations to promote critical thinking in elementary science classrooms.  My goal is to find the best methods for instruction in my 5th-grade classroom.

Beyond just identifying and incorporating best practices within my teaching, I am also interested in finding ways to support teachers.  One of my specific interests is learning more about effective teacher professional development opportunities.  Teachers need quality training that makes them feel confident in their role and pushes their thinking to provide a positive learning experience for all students.  As the educational world continues to evolve, teacher professional development needs to grow alongside it, and I hope to get involved with this area in education.
